‘Called to Command’ is the memoir of a WWII triple fighter ace (18 victories) who survived a difficult year in Stalag Luft I after being shot down by flak in his P47 whilst strafing a train. He went on to become a 3-star general, eventually commanding the 8th Air Force and serving as Inspector General USAF.
Jerry Johnson’s career spanned 3 wars and a brilliant 33 year military career. He was the first ace in the 56th Fighter Group and had 9 commands and flew a variety of aircraft including the P47, F84, B58 Hustler, B52 Stratofortress and U2 spy plane amongst many others. This book provides an interesting historical record as well as a unique personal perspective. Jerry Johnson retired in 1974 and died in 2002.
A nicely produced and signed memoir from a distinguished American ace and commander.
