Written by Gene Cernan with New York Times best-selling author, Don Davis, ‘The Last Man on the Moon‘ tells the story of Cernan’s experiences before & during his career as an astronaut. Prior to selection as an astronaut, Cernan was a US Navy fighter pilot and aeronautical engineer. He first flew into space on Gemini 9A undertaking the third ever spacewalk, and then flew down to within 10 miles of the lunar surface as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 10, the dress rehearsal for the moon landing of Apollo 11. The training for and flight of Apollo 17 is the climax of the book and is a gripping account of the mission which left man’s last footprint on the moon.
Gene Cernan, as the commander of Apollo 17 in 1972, became the last man to walk on the Moon. During this mission, he and geologist Harrison Schmitt explored the Taurus-Littrow region, collecting lunar samples. Cernan’s career was marked by his dedication to space exploration and his contributions to NASA’s success. He retired from the Navy and NASA in 1976 and later worked in the private sector. Gene Cernan passed away on January 16, 2017, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of space exploration. He appeared in a documentary based on this book in 2014.
An excellent book for anyone interested in the Apollo missions, enhanced by a very collectable moonwalker signature.
